Weekend wrap-up
So I managed to stay in Queens the entire weekend, even though I hadn't intended to do so. Yesterday, we met up with my friend Kristen and her husband, who came all the way down from Albany, and went to the Water Taxi Beach. I always look forward to going to the water taxi beach and yesterday was no different but it was really hot yesterday and it was a long walk from the subway station and, the water taxi beach seems to equate themselves with bars in Tribeca because they now charge $10 for basic mixed drinks. We've been to the water taxi beach since they opened two years ago and I always liked the place because it was laid back and fun but when an outdoor out-of-the-way bar in Long Island City starts charging $10 for a basic drink, that's when I become a little less enchanted with a place.
When I found out this afternoon through Eater that an institution in our neighborhood, Mickey's Sushi, which has been at it's present location for twenty one years, was closing I called them to find out what their last day was. As soon as I found it was today I called our neighbors, who had introduced us to the place, and we headed over there for dinner. The restaurant was filled with diners who wanted to have a last meal there before they closed and I was sad but probably not as sad as our neighbors, who had been eating there regularly for the last ten years. It is unfortunate though that one of the few good restaurants in our neighborhood, and probably the only one that has lasted as long as they have, is leaving. We had a relatively short-lived but good Indian restaurant in the neighborhood that also closed a few months ago.

Weekend wrap-up
Last night was dinner with friends at Sticky Rice, a cute Asian fusian restaurant in the Lower East Side. The food was good but I ended up sleeping through an uncomfortable night from food poisoning afterwards. Then, long-awaited karaoke where I got to sing the two Lily Allen songs in their catalog (Alfie's a fun song to sing). Today, we went to the Singapore Chili Crab Festival which I was a bit disappointing. I was picturing a variety of Singaporean street foods and performers but there were only about five different types of foods and the performers were spaced out over the course of the day. I didn't even eat the signature dish (Singapore Chili Crab, of course) because it just looked too messy to eat and didn't come with the proper utensils for easier consumption. Tonight, we went to Adam's friend's place for dinner where we greeted by a very friendly kitty (Rusty, meet your match!) and with homemade macaroni and cheese and cinnamon expresso ice cream (yum!).
A few photos:

Can you believe this is the first time Adam has ever worn blue jeans?

Le Pain Quotidien
Usually, I walk past Le Pain Quotidien to go to Flor de Mayo but as I walked past today, someone called out my name and it turned out to be my friend, Ingrid. I had forgotten she's leaving for Israel soon so I joined her and her date for lunch. I love French food, but nothing on their menu really appealed to me (I wanted breakfast but could not bring myself to order the only type of eggs they serve, soft-boiled) and I ended up ordering the Paris ham sandwich with three mustards which I thought was ok but not worth ten dollars (I had many good five dollar sandwiches in Paris) but I was really impressed with their hazelnut butter, which is left out on the table and is superb. Luckily, they sell what I like to call the peanut-butter version of Godiva (even though Godiva is not my favorite chocolate, it's a just a brand most people recognize) and I look forward to eating more of it at home.

Shopping in Soho
I headed down to Soho today to go to this sample sale. I need jeans but I avoid paying over $50 for jeans so I left with only a t-shirt. I'm rarely in Soho, so I decided to walk down Broadway to Canal Street. I was happy to see Eastern Mountain Sports as I've been looking for some outdoor clothing in hopes that we'll be going to Patagonia. I thought EMS would be less expensive than Paragon but I walked out disappointed. I stopped by American Eagle which I always thought was supposed to be a poor man's Abercrombie & Fitch but they're prices don't seem that way anymore. I had never been to the Uniqlo in Soho and was happy to find it on Broadway. The store is large but, unfortunately, they're still Gap-like sans the sales. Unfortunately, I can never seem to leave H&M without buying something--in this case, a shirt that I suspect will look great under a blazer. I also picked up a hoodie that I wasn't 100% sold on but I was influenced in part by my decision not to buy this item, by the fact that it was cold (how the hottest day of the summer is followed by the coldest day of the summer two days later still eludes me), and my desire for hoodie type clothing for Argentina. I had a little bit of buyer's regret when I discovered stains on the sleeve when I returned home, however.
