June 26, 2005

Went to the Renegade Craft Fair on Saturday. Unfortunately, I walked away empty-handed and extremely hot but I did spot Holly on my way to the subway. I was a little bit worried when I bought tickets for this movie (unfortunately, the description doesn't do the movie justice) but it was surprisingly good. A little evocative of Cinema Paradiso but the location and story make the movie quite different.

So after three years, the Justice Department finally decided to remove the drapes that covered the "Spirit of Justice." David Cross has a really funny segment about Ashcroft's previous insistence that the statue be covered in his album, "Shut Up, You Fucking Baby!"

Another one of the stores I frequent has started requiring people to check in their bags. I find this really annoying--there is actually a supermarket in my neighborhood that requires people to check in their bags which I find ludicrous. Granted, I haven't been to that many countries, but I don't think I've ever had to check my bag in a store in another country. I wonder whether the difference lies in the consumers or the mentality of retail businesses in the U.S.

Diamonds and Why I Like New York Noise

So De Beers, one of the largest producer of diamonds, recently opened a store in Manhattan. There were protests during their opening but when I walked past there today, I noticed the lack of protestors. I'm tempted to protest, especially having read the book Blood Diamonds. I highly recommend it--it's an eye opener. Apparently, Kayne West knows about conflict diamonds as well--his new release is called Diamonds (from Sierra Leone).

Even though Adam's a rudie, I never had the privilege of being introduced to Matisyahu until I saw one of his music videos tonight on New York Noise. He's a Hasidic Jew who's a reggae musician--a very cool combination. But besides playing neat music videos, New York Noise does cool things like interviewing bands at my favorite cupcake place, Sugar Sweet Sunshine and having children review indie music videos like in tonight's episode. One of the kid's comments on a Cat Power video, "Owls sing better than her and owls don't even sing!"

Jury duty

Jury duty wasn't as bad as it could've been--the attorney who did most of the speaking in the first jury selection pool I was in was jovial and asked potential jurors a lot of of questions which made sitting in the room more interesting, we got a one and a half hour lunch break which was punctuated by a summer performance series sponsored by the local Business Improvement District, they showed a movie in the central jury room in the afternoon, and I got through a chapter or two of my book (the chapters are long--it's a really lengthy book that's been taking me forever to read). I won't get into the details but let's say I narrowly escaped becoming an alternate juror for a case.

The aforementioned lunchtime entertainment was held in the plaza fronting a courthouse across the street from the one where I was serving jury duty and included record spins from a pretty good DJ and choreographed dance performances. The best part was when the dancers decided to do what they called "The Courthouse Slide" (a better danced version of the Electric Slide) and got one of the courthouse judges and some attorneys to join them. I wish I had my digital camera so I could've shared photos with you.

Jury Duty: A Prelude

The jury duty system sucks--you recieve a summons telling you when to start calling, but you really have no way of finding out what day you actually have to start until after 5 the day before you're supposed to appear. How is anyone supposed to plan their work schedule? Speaking of work, the new Shea/Olympic stadium proposal is probably going to mean a lot more work for me.

Apparently, San Francisco might have transit strikes in their future. Just picture a subway strike in NYC and you can get an idea of how much it will suck for people in San Francisco if their transit workers strike. I should know, I was in San Francisco during the 1997 transit strike. Two and a half hour commutes and packed street cars are definitely no fun.

Baby Man

Courtesy of Metafilter, what a freak. Some excerpts:

Three weeks after his father's death in December 2003, Windsor threw away every piece of grown-up clothing he had, bought an oversize crib, a specially made high chair, a diaper-changing table, and a closet full of specially made baby dresses, rumba panties and onesies.

Meanwhile, he says, Barbara sort of got into being "mommy" to Windsor's "baby." She would change his diapers; she had sex with him in his diapers.

"Heck," he says, "I even proposed to her in a diaper."

And he's not alone:

Men, the majority of the "full-time adult baby/diaper lover" (AB/DL) community by at least 9-to-1 according to sites like dpf.com (the Diaper Pail Friends network) and infantilism.org, are known to organize "diaper lover" parties in New York and L.A., where they dance around in diapers and make small talk about their day jobs. In late July, the second annual "Adult Baby Camp" gets under way at a campground in Alberta, Canada, where a few dozen outdoorsy babies are expected to show, and fish the remote Wildhay River in nothing more than a cloth nappy.

Am I really that old?

Apparently, Colin Farrell recently celebrated his 29th birthday, which makes him two years younger than me. For some reason, this really disturbed me.
