You would think a bunch of hurricanes originating in the Caribbean wouldn't have much of an effect on New York City but the last three big hurricanes have meant heavy rainstorms in NYC which have wreaked havoc on our lovely subway system, including tonight, when taking the subway back home to Queens meant long waits and confusion. It ended up taking me twice as long to get home tonight. The hurricane-related rain has also meant anxiety-filled work days for Adam and I since our apartment is so prone to flooding (luckily, it hasn't flooded yet, knock on wood).

Normally, I get really frustrated about these kind of things but not today--after nearly having to resign ourselves to losing yet another co-op, we discovered the problem had been resolved. Won't bore you with the details but let's just say one obstacle has been overcome--let's just hope there's no more thrown our way.

Yay! I was finally able to sell my wedding dress! I had it cleaned shortly after we returned from the honeymoon and it's been sitting in our apartment since then. I posted it on e-bay twice but my reserve (minimum) wasn't reached either time and then Adam posted it and it finally sold. Now, if only we could have this luck with the co-op...

Saw Mean Girls this weekend. I'd heard good things but my expectations weren't that high but it turned out to be much better than I expected. Last night, Adam and I went to see one of my favorite bands, The Muffs, play. This is the band I wanted to see the night of my bachelorette party but ended up having too much fun and getting a little too tipsy with my friends to schlep all the way to Brooklyn to see them so I was pretty happy they came back to the city to play. The first opening band was awful and after I saw Kim, the lead singer, walk by I entertained the thought of interviewing the band. I'd interviewed them once before and didn't really like their newest album so I hadn't tried to set one up in advance but there were two or three more opening bands to go and I figured, why not? I thought the interview went fairly well--the problem is I hadn't brought a recorder (or a camera) and we ended up spending a lot more time with the band than I thought we would and I didn't have that many questions prepared. But hopefully it'll still make for a good piece in Adam's zine.

Adam also had an interview scheduled with Tommy Ramone so we watched the new documentary on the Ramones, End of the Century. It was good--I have to confess I've never been a hardcore Ramones fan. I knew next to nothing about the Ramones until I met Adam and in fact, was kind of offered an opportunity to interview Joey Ramone a number of years ago. I had just gotten into punk and zines but just younger pop punk bands like The Bouncing Souls and The Muffs and had gone to a Ramones birthday celebration to interview The Prissteens and decided to interview George Tabb as well when he said the person I should really be interviewing was Joey. I think Joey had walked by at that moment or George brought him over and, since I knew nothing about the Ramones and was a little taken aback by the way Joey looked, I secretly hoped I wouldn't have to and, luckily, Joey said later when George asked him if I could interview him and I could tell he really didn't want to be bothered so I was pretty relieved at the time. Of course, I'm sure most punks would've shaken their head in disbelief by my ignorance but, unfortunately, my education in punk was very limited until I met Adam (and even now my punk knowledge hasn't expanded that much).

I know, I know--I've taken my sweet ass time posting but I didn't want to post about the new co-op we're now trying to buy only to have to have to follow up with a report that it didn't work out for one reason or another. But this is all I'll say as far as the co-op search goes.

I don't know what's up with my computer these days--I happened to go to a webpage one day that I've been to before and all of these pop-ads started appearing and I couldn't close out of all of them and, ever since then, I get a pop-up ad every few minutes which is pretty annoying. Adam installed a program for me but, while it blocks pop-up ads associated with websites that have them, it doesn't do anything for the aformentioned pop-ups and, on top of that, I've had to re-enter my username and password information everytime I want to view something on a webpage that requires it.

Anyhow, during my lunch break today, I noticed that those Falun Gong activists who seem to be everywhere lately decided to blitz Fifth and Madison Avenues near where I work. I don't know why they've come out in full force lately but, personally, I find them annoying. A lot of the times, they camp out on every street corner at an intersection or even a larger area and more often than not, they like to do those re-enactments which I really don't like. Another recent pet peeve has been Revlon's advertising blitz featuring rotating talking heads like Halle Berry and Julianne Moore and that stupid stupid song that sometimes invades my head during work.

What $160k across the river can get you

I decided to peruse the general craiglist postings for New York City (generally I just look in the Queens section) when I came across this co-op across the river in NJ. I would so consider this place if I didn't have to live in NYC (it's a requirement of my job and, as beautiful as the poolside views are, I don't know that I could live outside the city).

Apartment Six

Just finished reading Apartment Six by this weblogger. One of the best zines I've read, in some ways reminiscent of Cometbus (one of the most highly regarded zines for those who aren't familiar) but with the writing and promise of someone who could easily write professionally to a larger audience. I can't wait for the next issue.
