Summer = Film Festivals!

One of the reasons why I like summer are the film festivals that take place during the summer. They're a great opportunity to see films you ordinarily wouldn't get the chance to see. The only challenge for me is discerning which film is one that I'll enjoy, especially for those film festival films for which there are no or next to no reviews. I purchased a ticket to see Manufactured Landscapes at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival about a month ago but ended up not seeing it due to a combination of laziness and uncertainty about how much I'd enjoy the movie. After reading more reviews about the film, I realized I would probably like it and ended up going to see it at the Film Forum and was glad that I did. Both the film and the photographs in it are quite compelling. Today, I saw Dear Pyongyang, which was shown as part of a Japanese film festival, a intimate film which focuses on a woman's father, a North Korean loyalist and activist who lives in Japan and sent her brothers to North Korea in the 1970s and also a film that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, there aren't any films in this year's Asian American International Film Festival or New York International Latino Film Festival that really appeal to me and it looks like I'll have to wait until the fall for more film festival goodness.
