Heat, pt II

Just when I thought that the heating situation had been taken care of, once the temperatures started falling this week, I noticed our radiators were back to emanating pathetically low levels of heat. I ran into our next-door neighbor the following morning who commented on the same thing and when I responded that I thought our apartment was the only one, he pointed out that everyone on our floor was experiencing the same.

I fumed during the subway ride to work and called the building manager to express my frustrations. To my surpise, he responded angrily back, claiming that he had recieved many complaints from residents on the lower floors who were angry that their apartments were overheated, that he's been nothing been but responsive to Adam and I (although, save for last week, I've never seen evidence of this), and that he would talk to the co-op board about the situation. He also suggested I send something in writing to him to help him with the latter. So I did exactly that, only I decided a letter from people on our floor would be more effective than a letter coming just from me. I only know a few of the people on the floor so I did hesitate for a second but I'm glad I went from door to door. Hearing my neighbor's complaints about the heat made me pretty angry, in fact. One neighbor wears layer after layer and special gloves to keep warm and even turns on her oven sometimes just for the heat. Other neighbors complained about their children being cold and expressed other grievances about building management in general. I also recieved the added benefit about hearing that the heat has always been low during the colder months and that the building management raises it temporarily during Thanksgiving and Christmas. I mailed the letter today--hopefully it will work. I don't want to spend the next few months freezing inside our apartment.
